Holy Overshadowing

The ideas that flow through the song formed in my mind during a time of personal prayer sometime mid-2012. I was going through a set of particularly challenging circumstances and was looking for what God had to say about it all. As I meditated on things he says in his word, I began to unpack the contrasts we see sometimes - shadows of darkness can threaten us, but he offers us the shadow of his wings (Psalm 91). The burden of oppression can threaten to weigh us down, but Jesus offers us his burden to wear which is easy and light! (Matthew 11:28-30) This began to take the form of a prayerful poem, built around these contrasts. Discovering afresh his desire to protect and unburden us, I could only worship with another of my favourite verses: "But You, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the One who lifts my head" (Psalm 3:3) - and this eventually became the chorus! The shape of the song needed a lot of work, however, and I had the privilege of being able to take the song to Graham Kendrick, who not only helped vastly improve the structure of the song but also added some invaluable ideas, including the memorable opening line. As a result I am honoured to share a cowriting credit with him.

O spread your wings of mercy over me
And guard my heart with true humility
No shadow of the darkness pressing in
Only the holy overshadowing
Underneath your wings, overshadowing

No refuge will I seek but God alone
No hiding place save only at your throne
Only the cross, the blood to wash my sin
Only the holy overshadowing
Underneath your wings, overshadowing

You are my shield and my glory
You are the lifter of my head
And though the storms may rage around me
I’ll be safe within
Beneath the holy overshadowing

No burden on my back too hard to bear
Only the easy load you bid me wear
Until these troubles pass, my heart will sing
Praise for the holy overshadowing
Underneath your wings, overshadowing

Underneath your wings
Overshadowing, overshadowing
